2020 Partnership with City of South Bend Venues Parks and Arts

We are excited to share that we are entering into a partnership with City of South Bend Venues Parks & Arts (VPA) to provide Y members with access to O’Brien Fitness Center. This O’Brien/YMCA Partnership will allow you full use of O’Brien Fitness Center located at 321 East Water Street, South Bend, IN 46614, beginning on Monday, July 6, 2020.

In addition to a newly upgraded fitness center with 14 Paramount strength training stations, 34 Precor cardio machines, and a full line of free weights. O’Brien/YMCA Partnership members will have access to complimentary Childwatch, unlimited group fitness classes, exclusive Les Mills fitness programs, reciprocity at most YMCAs nationwide, and discounts at VPA programs and amenities including golf, basketball leagues, camps, and more.

The O’Brien/YMCA Partnership will continue the mission of both the YMCA and Venues Parks & Arts by providing the community with an inclusive and welcoming environment that encourages wellness through learning, movement, healthy lifestyle, connection, and serving communities. The new partnership is designed to be financially sustainable while remaining accessible to all members of our community through scholarship opportunities for memberships and programs. In line with the Y’s current financial assistance program, no child or family will be denied access to programs due to inability to pay.

The O’Brien Fitness Center is currently undergoing renovations to expand the fitness and programming space throughout the building as well as upgrade several amenities, including locker rooms and restrooms. The building will remain fully operational while renovations take place.

2020 Merger

As you may be aware, YMCA of Michiana and YMCA of Southwest Michigan entered into a management agreement in April 2018. To continue to better serve our communities, the Boards of Directors have agreed to merge the associations effective January 1, 2020, into one association: YMCA of Greater Michiana. This association will include:

  • Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA
  • Niles-Buchanan YMCA
  • South Bend-Mishawaka YMCA (formerly Riverview Family YMCA)
  • YMCA Camp Eberhart

As we merge and share best practices, policies will be aligned. New policies for former YMCA of Michiana members include:

  • Membership dues will be drafted on the 10th of the month. These dues pay for the current month and any changes to your account will take effect the following month.
  • We will attempt to collect declined membership charges from a credit/debit card up to 3 times. A $15 late fee will be applied and your membership suspended if not paid by the end of the month for which the charges are incurred.
  • Non-sufficient funds from electronically accessed accounts will have a $15 NSF (non-sufficient funds) fee added and returned checks will have a $20 NSF fee.
  • Membership hold fees will be charged at $10 a month with the exception of seniors (65+) and those with medical reasons.
  • Current membership type and rates will convert to new types and rates effective January 1, 2020.

2019 Intent to Merge with YMCA of Michiana

YMCA of Michiana & YMCA of Southwest Michigan members,

We would like to take this time to provide you with an update on the status of our management agreement.

We’re excited to share with you that the YMCA of Michiana and the YMCA of Southwest Michigan boards of directors have voted on their intent to merge into one association. The merger is slated to be effective January 1, 2020.

The intent to merge was approved by both boards of directors and the YMCA of Michiana Board of Trustees. The final details of the merger will be completed over the coming months.

Our new organization will serve the area with four locations:

  • Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA in St. Joseph, MI
  • Niles-Buchanan YMCA in Niles, MI
  • Riverview Family YMCA in South Bend, IN
  • YMCA Camp Eberhart in Three Rivers, MI

Please click here for a press release regarding our intent to merge that will be sent out later this morning.
In addition, please click here to view Frequently Asked Questions & Answers regarding our intent to merge.

If you have any additional questions, please reach out to your preferred branch.

2019 Rate Increase

With the recent jump in the cost of utilities, Michigan’s minimum wage steadily increasing, and maintenance costs rising, our Board of Directors has approved a modest membership fee increase to ensure our ability to continue to operate at the standard of excellence our members have come to enjoy and expect. Please direct any questions or concerns you may have to Member Service.

Letters were mailed out to all Members detailing these changes on November 1, 2018. To view the letters, please follow the links below:

2017 Merger

As you are aware, Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA and Niles-Buchanan YMCA merged into one association in March 2017. As a result, we are proud to offer even more options to our members and remain steadfast in our initiatives to our community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

As the branches continue to merge and share best practices between branches, we are aligning policies. Effective February 1, 2018:

  • Membership dues will be drafted on the 10th of the month. These dues pay for the current month and any changes to your account will take effect the following month.
  • NSF fees and late fees for non-payment will be $15.00 a month.
  • Membership rates will remain the same.
